Are we unconsciously influenced by the 'behaviour' of mass media sensationalising and amplifying ordinary news, unconsciously biasing the individual's cognitive decision making processes and 'going along' with the mainstream view that is counter to their value-system?
Very good question. The collective unconscious is very much picked up in social psychology and in Hofstedes work around rituals, heroes & symbols. The next blog starts to unpick Ecological Psychology and might add to your train of thought in your comment.
There is certainly dissonance experienced in juxtaposition between the mainstream view and individual values.
